Hilarion – turn out the shafts

On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Hilarion the New, abbot of Pelicite, who lived in the 8th century.

The saint received his nickname in Rus' thanks to the weather, which became very warm on his day. It was believed that even if the snow had remained until Hilarion, now it would definitely begin to melt – and very quickly. This means it’s time to turn the shafts out of the sleigh and put the winter transport into storage. Also on this day it was supposed to clean the ponds that were already free of ice.

In the clearings from which the snow had just melted, the first spring flowers – coltsfoot – were blooming. This flower was very popular among the people. There is such a legend associated with him. One woman's beloved daughter died. Having lost the most precious thing, the mother gave all her affection and warmth to the grave of her deceased daughter. But not a drop of warmth or affection was given to the other girl – this woman’s stepdaughter. From the feelings of the mother and stepmother, a flower was born, the leaves of which always face the velvety, warm side to the earth, and the smooth, cold side to the world of people.
