Frank Lampard (47 years old) is close to returning Coventry to the Premier League, 25 years after his last appearance.

After complicated periods, and even failures, at Chelsea and Everton, Frank Lampard is relaunching his coaching career in the Championship, where he prepares Coventry and is close to securing promotion to the Premier League.

After a legendary playing career, notably at Chelsea, where he won the Champions League, the Europa League and three Premier Leagues, Frank Lampard's transition to the technical bench has been marked by ups and downs.

Less successful experiences at Chelsea and Everton seemed to have curbed his ambitions, but the English manager found Coventry the opportunity to bounce back.

Lampard, close to promotion to the Premier League with Coventry

His coaching career got off to a promising start at Derby County where, just two years after hanging up his boots, he led the team to 6th place and into the promotion play-offs. However, the following experiences were more difficult.

At Chelsea, after a positive first season, he was sacked in January 2021, with the team in 9th place. At Everton, despite avoiding relegation, he was also sacked in January 2023, with the club in 19th place. A brief return to Chelsea to finish the season resulted in a bleak record of one win in 11 games.

In November 2024, Lampard took over Coventry, who at the time were 17th in the Championship. The objective was to save from relegation.

The bet proved an immediate success. Lampard led the team to a remarkable comeback, finishing the season in 5th place with a record of 16 wins, 4 draws and 9 losses, securing a place in the play-offs.

Although promotion was narrowly missed out to Sunderland, the manager proved his competence again.

This season, Coventry City, now leading the Championship, are exceeding all expectations. With most of the players from last season and winter signings like Frank Onyeka and Romain Esse, Lampard has found the right formula.

The attack is the strong point, 84 successes in 41 matches, the best in the championship.

With 84 points and 5 games to go, the “Sky Blues” have already secured a place in the top 4 and can secure promotion to the Premier League as early as next Saturday if they beat last-placed and already relegated Sheffield Wednesday.
