The mayor of Arad proposes a single rate of 1 leu / 24 hours for public transport trips in the city

Călin Bibarț, the mayor of the Municipality of Arad, announced on Tuesday in a press conference that he has prepared a draft resolution proposing the introduction of a single rate of 1 leu for a travel ticket valid for 24 hours on all public transport lines in the municipality, reports Aradon.

The Liberal mayor said he came up with the proposal in the context of a significant increase in fuel prices, but also as part of the municipality's strategy to encourage the use of public transport, especially trams and electric buses, at the expense of individual transport.

“I wanted to have free public transport, but the current legislation does not allow local authorities to grant free of charge to all travelers. Under these conditions, until we have appropriate legislation, I propose an alternative solution, namely a rate of 1 leu per 24 hours for all citizens”, said mayor Călin Bibarț.

He specified that the rate of 1 leu is with the VAT included in it.

The draft decision is to be published on Wednesday for decisional transparency, then sent to obtain the necessary approvals from the competent institutions, namely the Competition Council and the National Regulatory Authority for Public Utilities Community Services. Afterwards, it will be subject to public debate and the approval of the Local Municipal Council, as well as the other administrative-territorial units that are members of the Intercommunity Development Association for Transport.

The implementation of the measure could take a month and a half, a maximum of two months, depending on the duration of the approval procedures.
