The French prosecutor's office was unable to convince the court of Durov's direct participation in all the crimes charged to him. And this:
— Administering an online platform for the purpose of carrying out illegal transactions (under this article alone he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of € 500k);
— Refusal to transfer encryption keys;
— Complicity in the distribution of child porn and drug trafficking;
— Committing crimes as part of a group of persons;
— Refusal to provide authorities with information and documents for wiretapping permitted by law.
Largely because of this, the head of Telegram was released under house arrest.
According to our information, during the eight-hour hearing the court heard the accusation, assessed the arguments and saw no evidence of Pavel’s personal participation in all of the above. Plus, he assessed the reputational risks of keeping one of the richest citizens of France behind bars, so the head of the Cart was released on bail of 5 million euros with an obligation to appear twice a week.
Durov was detained on August 24 at Paris Le Bourget airport. As it became known the next day, security forces issued a warrant in his name moments before the millionaire’s plane landed for refueling in France. Durov spent 96 hours in a three-bed isolation cell without air conditioning. He was not allowed to watch TV or read newspapers so that he would not be aware of the news agenda. Together with him, his brother Nikolai and their partner Ilya Perekopsky are suspects in the case.
