At least 13 US bases in Middle Eastern countries have been damaged in Iranian attacks and are uninhabitable. US Central Command (CENTCOM) had to move soldiers to hotels and offices throughout the region, the New York Times wrote on Thursday.

According to military representatives and US officials cited by the newspaper, Iranian attacks destroyed or severely damaged US installations in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, including buildings, communications systems, radars and support infrastructure. Due to these disruptions, thousands of US troops have been moved to hotels, temporary offices and bases abroad, but away from the range of Iranian missiles. According to the New York Times, most ground forces now fight essentially remotely, with the exception of fighter pilots and crews who operate and maintain combat aircraft and conduct attacks.
Kuwait suffered the most due to its proximity to Iran and the concentration of American forces in the region. The Iranians seriously damaged the local bases of Port Shuaiba, Ali as-Salim and Camp Buehring.
And recently released satellite images also confirmed severe damage at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.
As a result, military planners now face the challenge of maintaining strikes against Iranian targets while managing degraded infrastructure, distributed personnel, and communications networks, which certainly have a direct impact on the pace, scope, and stability of these operations.
CENTCOM has not yet reported how many troops have been transferred to replacement bases, but at the end of February, U.S. forces in the Middle East numbered about 40,000. soldiers.
Sources cited by the New York Times warned that the threat to US troops stationed in the region has reached its highest level in years. (PAP)
