The Environmental Guard makes a new check at the Bucharest City Hall. What are the problems targeted?

The Environmental Guard has started a new control at Bucharest City Hall, to verify the measures taken to reduce air pollution. The reason is that PM2.5 and PM10 indicator values are frequently exceeded. One of the sources of pollution is the anti-slip material used in winter.

Two important causes

Specialists believe that one of the potential causes of pollution is the non-slip material from the cold season, and another is represented by construction sites. After the controls, fines were applied and measures were ordered, writes News.ro.

“The repeated exceedances of the values of PM2.5 and PM10 indicators, signaled by the stations of the National Air Quality Monitoring Network, have triggered a new series of controls in the field, at the level of the Capital, carried out by the Bucharest Municipality Commissariat of the National Environmental Guard, starting from March 16, 2026, in order to identify the sources of pollution and reduce the impact on the population”, the Garda sent of the Environment.

According to the cited institution, the checks showed that one of the potential causes of the pollution is the non-slip material used in the cold season, left on the road and drawn into the traffic air, especially on the big boulevards, in the area of curbs and tram lines.

“The phenomenon was amplified by the lack of precipitation and the high temperatures, which favor the resuspension of particles,” says the Environmental Guard.

Fines of 800,000 lei, after checking 48 construction sites

In parallel, the controls targeted the large construction sites in Bucuești – from infrastructure works and rehabilitation of tram lines, to construction, demolitions and the Metro Highway 6 project.

“In numerous cases, deviations from the legislation on air quality were found: the lack of surface moistening, the absence of wheel washing ramps, the improper storage of materials and the uncovered transport of waste. The Environmental Guard checked 48 construction sites, applied 42 contravention sanctions, in a total amount of 800,000 lei, and ordered immediate measures to reduce dust emissions,” the commissioners said the cited institution.

They mentioned that the emphasis was placed on the heavily trafficked areas affected by the works, such as Bessarabia Boulevard, Pantelimon Road and Theodor Pallady Boulevard, including the lanes intended for public transport.

The institution also states that it has started a new control at the Bucharest City Hall, to verify the measures adopted to improve the air quality in the Capital.

“These actions will be carried out on a permanent basis, both at economic operators and at local authorities, as part of a control plan of the Bucharest Municipality Commissariat regarding the protection of the surrounding air and the environment as a whole”, says the Environmental Guard.
