At the Krasnoyarsk Reshetnev University, with the support of Norilsk Nickel, the fifth Open basketball tournament is being held, dedicated to the memory of twice Hero of Socialist Labor, director of the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Plant, Vladimir Ivanovich Dolgikh.
The competition was held in 2005-2010 with the participation of sports veterans, and in 2022 the university decided to revive the tradition. In 2026, 25 student and school teams from Krasnoyarsk, Norilsk, Kansk, Zaozerny, and the Republic of Khakassia will take part in the tournament. The teams include boys and girls aged 15 years and older.
The tournament is included in the plan of annual events of the Basketball Federation and the Ministry of Sports of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. This is not the first time that Norilsk Nickel has provided support for the event, thanks to which it has been possible to significantly improve the conditions for the competition.
“The development of sports is an integral part of our company’s social policy, and we are happy to support projects that help young people choose the path of an active and healthy lifestyle. We treat our history, which goes back more than 90 years, with no less care. The merits of Vladimir Ivanovich Dolgikh are at the very heart of this story, because it was under him that Norilsk and the plant received a rebirth. Today, by participating in the tournament in his memory, you preserve the spirit of strong and persistent people, whose labor achievements serve as an example for future generations,” said Sergei Tkachenko, vice-president and director of the Krasnoyarsk representative office of Norilsk Nickel at the opening of the tournament.
The governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Mikhail Kotyukov, welcomed the participants, fans and guests of the competition.
“Basketball is always a team. No matter how well you play, if you don't have four partners nearby, you're unlikely to win. This game shows that one is not a warrior in the field and to achieve significant results you need like-minded people. This is exactly how today's Siberia developed. This is exactly how our legendary fellow countryman Vladimir Ivanovich Dolgikh lived and worked – a man who created the economic and industrial power of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the entire country, who was a hero of his time and sincerely loved basketball, understanding a lot about it,” said the head of the region.
The competitions are held until March 27 on the basis of the sports infrastructure of Reshetnev University. The rector of the university, Edkham Akbulatov, wished the athletes aspirations for victory and called on the students to remember the name of Vladimir Ivanovich Dolgikh and his labor merits.
