“Romania is far from the glory period” » Noted players and where the “tricolors” can speculate

Before the decisive showdown between Romania and Turkey, GSP spoke to Turkish journalist Akif Armagan, with experience at ASpor, who analyzed the perception of the tricolors and the upcoming duel.
In Turkey, Romania is seen as an uncomfortable and respected opponent, even if it no longer has the strength of past generations. The journalist from “Crescent Land” points out that the tricolors are considered a solid team, with experience and capable of creating problems, especially in high-stakes matches.
Several Romanian players are well known in the Turkish championship, especially Ianis Hagi, appreciated for his executions, but also Alexandru Maxim, noted for his consistency. Radu Drăgușin is seen as a strong defender and Dennis Man as a complete offensive player.
The legend Gheorghe Hagi remains a symbol in Turkey, still being a benchmark for talented players, while Mircea Lucescu is respected for the impact he had on Turkish football. There is still nostalgia for the Romanians who made history in Turkey, such as Gică Popescu, Daniel Pancu, Viorel Moldovan or Adrian Ilie.
Although there is confidence in a qualification, Armagan warns that Romania is a dangerous opponent, and an elimination would be considered a major setback for the Turks, in the context of the long absence from the World Championships: since 2002, when the Turks even reached the small final of the final tournament in Japan and South Korea.

“Romania is a soccer nation that we respect enormously”
– How is the Romanian national team perceived in Turkey at the moment? Is it seen as a rebuilding team or a dangerous opponent?
– Although Romania is somewhat far from its glory days and the very talented generations it had, it is a footballing nation that we respect enormously. It has a very experienced coach, international players and most importantly it is a consistent team in tournaments. Matches against Romania have always been difficult for Turkey. We see them as a resilient and dangerous team.
– Which Romanian players are currently known in Turkey? Are names like Ianis Hagi, Radu Drăgușin or Dennis Man discussed?
– Yes, Ianis Hagi is very popular now because he plays here. His shooting ability quickly stood out, reminiscent of his father. Not only Hagi, but also Alexandru Maxim, who has been playing for a long time in Turkey, is a very important and constant player. We watched Drăgușin against Galatasaray last year and we know he is a very good defender. There is not much to say about Dennis Man, he is a complete offensive player and very talented.
– What does Gheorghe Hagi's name mean to Turkish supporters? Is it still considered a symbol?
– Absolutely! Hagi is still a phenomenon in Turkey. Even today, the most talented players are compared to him. It is still a landmark and remains associated with the last European trophy won by a Turkish club. He is a huge legend, respected by everyone, not just Galatasaray fans.

– How is Mircea Lucescu seen in Turkey, especially now, as Romania's coach?
– He is undoubtedly another legend who left his mark on Turkish football. Although his adventure with the Turkish national team was not very successful, the titles won with Galatasaray and Beşiktaş are still discussed. His coaching style inspired many Turkish technicians such as Okan Buruk and Sergen Yalcin.
– Is there still nostalgia in Turkey for players like Gheorghe Popescu or the period when the Romanians dominated the championship?
– Definitely. Every time old recaps are aired, Romanian players appear. Popescu is one of them, a huge star who won the respect of the fans through professionalism. We can also add Adrian Ilie and Viorel Moldovan, two very talented strikers, who remain in the memory of the supporters.
– Is Daniel Pancu remembered in Turkey for his famous goal moment?
– Yes, it's an iconic moment. Even today, when a field player reaches the goal, Pancu is remembered. For Beşiktaş fans, however, he is also important for his performances and goals in the centenary season.

Where can the “tricolors” speculate: “Turkey does not have a classic “number 9″”
– Are the Turkish fans and media sure of victory or are there any fears about Romania?
– There is trust, but also respect. Everyone knows that Romania is a strong opponent, with a coach who knows Turkey very well and with effective players. A difficult match is expected.
– What are the main assets of Turkey before this match?
– Turkey gained stability under Vincenzo Montella. The team has offensive variety and a lot of technical quality. She is dangerous both in possession and on the counter-attack. The main strength is the offensive line, but also the discipline of the game. Montella managed to combine talent with organization.
– Why do you think the federation chose Beşiktaş's stadium for this match?
– Because it is the newest and most modern stadium, with a very strong atmosphere. In addition, its central position makes it easily accessible for fans in Istanbul.
– What is Turkey's main weakness that Romania could exploit?
– Although they create many chances, Turkey do not have a classic “number 9”, which affects their effectiveness in front of goal. Also, the midfield, although very technical, can struggle physically.
– If Romania eliminated Turkey, would it be considered a major failure?
– Yes. Turkey have not qualified for a World Cup since 2002 and an elimination would throw Montella's future into question. It would be perceived as a major failure.
– How big is the advantage of Turkey playing in Istanbul?
– It's hard to say exactly, because recently Turkey has played in other cities as well. However, the atmosphere is sure to be strong, and the fact that they don't have to travel extra is a plus for the players.
