Before the war broke out, about 138 ships passed through Hormuz every day, carrying one-fifth of the world's crude oil. Currently, on average, only five or six vessels cross the strait every day. An analysis by BBC journalists shows that about a third of recent crossings of the strait have been made by ships linked to Iran.

The Pentagon said U.S. forces were implementing a “multi-phase plan to reduce the threat from Iranian armed boats, mines and cruise missiles.”
