Constantine circles
Constantine is one of the 42 martyrs commemorated on this day. In Rus', on this day it was considered necessary to trample the snow around wells so that dirty water would not flow into them. To do this, they were walked around in circles. The first circle was trampled by the birthday boy – a boy named Konstantin.
The Russian people highly valued well water and wrote songs, proverbs, and sayings about it.
Birdwatching on Konstantin. They said that on this day a white stork always arrives. But the swallow could be delayed on its way – and therefore it was “lured” to the villages so that it would bring spring sooner. But the heat sometimes lingered—and the woodpecker reported this. If he started knocking on wood in March, it foreshadowed long cold weather.
