Jaron Siewert (32), the former coach of Fuchse Berlin, revealed that two months after being sacked by the German champions, he suffered a stroke, the second in his life. The German technician spoke about the complicated situation he went through, explained what the reasons were and stated his goals for his career.
In 2025, under Jaron Siewert, Fuchse Berlin achieved the first national title in the club's history. Although he coached the team from the capital of Germany for 5 years, he was dismissed, in a surprising way, after a few stages of the new season. His place was taken by Nicolej Krickau, a Danish coach.
Jaron Siewert, second stroke at 31: 'That's when I really hit rock bottom'
Two months after the dismissal, Siewert suffered a stroke, his second in 3 yearsi. In 2022, the technician originally from Berlin suffered a stroke during a training session of the team he was managing.
“Two months after I was fired, I had a stroke. That's when I really hit rock bottom. The ground literally ran out from under my feet. I started questioning everything,” said Siewert, quoted by Bild.
“At the end of October, October 29 to be exact, I suffered another stroke. To go through such an event only two months after being fired… I don't have to explain to anyone the effect it has on you and the thoughts that go through your mind about the future“, he added.
Siewert explained that according to the doctors, the stroke was not caused by stress, but by a drug they prescribed him in 2022. However, he does not blame the doctors.
“The doctors assured me that it was not related to stress, otherwise it would have happened during the season, at the latest in the championship final with Rhein-Neckar Löwen, or when my body would have relaxed during the summer break, or immediately after the dismissal announcement, but not two months away,” said Siewert.
“Now they believe that the medicine they prescribed me in 2022 is responsible for the new stroke. They gave me an anticoagulant which, at the time, was the correct treatment, I don't blame the doctors for anything. It was a drug still in the testing phase, but which, according to the latest studies, is not indicated for stroke patients. I was put on a new anticoagulant, with which I feel very well, and I'm looking forward,” said the 32-year-old coach.
Siewert has stated that he still wants to be a head coach, which is the plan A of his career. However, the experiences he went through helped him realize that handball is not everything.
“Since then, my life has been marked by gratitude for getting past this moment. I was already more optimistic after the stroke in 2022. Sport is not everything; family, friends and genuine relationships matter most. I look ahead, I set goals and I want to come back stronger than I was. I have to accept the situation and move forward with determination”, explained the former handball player.
“I'm fine. Much better than at the end of October when it happened. Then I was very sick. Now I'm getting close to 100% and I'm full of energy, ready for new challenges. That's also the reason why I'm talking about it now, because I felt like I've been hiding. I have only one plan, plan A, which is to be a head coach and I hope to be back on the sidelines as soon as possible. That's what I've been working for in the last months,” he said Siewert.
After breaking up with Jaron Siewert, Fuchse Berlin did excellently in the Champions League, finishing Group A – which also included Dinamo Bucharest – in first place, with a record of 11 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, the reigning German champions are 6 points behind SC Magdeburg in the national championship and will find it difficult to defend their trophy in 2025.
