Nicușor Dan, after the meeting with the OMV Petrom delegation: “Romania imports approximately 80% of the crude oil consumed. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz creates major difficulties”

President Nicușor Dan stated on Monday, after a meeting at the Cotroceni Palace with representatives of OMV Petrom, that Romania imports approximately 80% of the crude oil needed for domestic consumption and warned that its own resources are not sufficient. “We agreed that there will be close collaboration and cooperation with the Government so that Romania can overcome this period well,” said the Head of State.
During the meeting in Cotroceni, the president talked with Alfred Stern, the chairman of the OMV Petrom Supervisory Board, and with Christina Verchere, the CEO of OMV Petrom.
“We, of course, also discussed the current situation of the energy market, even though the meeting was set before the outbreak of the war in Iran. OMV Petrom representatives presented me with a detailed briefing on short- and medium-term developments, as well as on the scenarios they are considering.
We also addressed the topic of fuel prices and security of supply. We agreed that there will be close collaboration and cooperation with the Government so that Romania can overcome this new period of pressure on energy prices”, Nicușor Dan wrote in a post on X.
The statements come in the context where fuel prices have increased in recent days. On Friday, gasoline approached the threshold of 8.5 lei per liter, and diesel 9 lei per liter.
The head of state warned that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz affects all states that depend on oil imports.
“Closing the Strait of Hormuz creates major difficulties for all oil and fuel importing states. Romania has its own resources, but they are insufficient, which is why we import approximately 80% of the crude oil needed for domestic consumption,” said Nicușor Dan.
The first gas from the Black Sea will be delivered in 2027
President Nicușor Dan discussed with OMV representatives about the evolution of the Neptun Deep project in the Black Sea.
According to Nicușor Dan, the project is “advancing according to the schedule” and will deliver the first natural gas in 2027.
“It is an investment of more than 4 billion euros that will strengthen Romania's energy security and reduce our dependence on imports. Neptun Deep will almost double Romania's gas production and will significantly contribute to increasing the country's energy independence”, Nicușor Dan also said.
