Cyber attack on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The eVisa and eConsulate websites were inaccessible

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces that on Friday afternoon and at the beginning of Saturday night, a cyber attack was detected against the platforms eviza.mae.ro and econsulat.ro.
The cyber attack was of the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) type, and the targeted sites experienced slow downs and, “for short periods of time, became inaccessible, announced the MAE.
“The protective equipment, together with the MFA specialists, acted promptly and managed to significantly reduce the impact of the attack. Currently, all digital systems of the MFA are working normally”, according to the MFA.
What are DDoS attacks?
DDoS attacks represent an artificial overload of digital traffic, with the aim of blocking access to a website, states the MAE. They do not involve accessing or compromising data, not being equivalent to a hacking-type IT intrusion.
“No sensitive information was accessed by the authors of these attacks, but the major inconvenience generated by such actions is the fact that the platforms become temporarily inaccessible to Romanian citizens, preventing the provision of the digital services they need”, stated the MFA.
Globally, the frequency of these attacks is increasing, and Romania and government platforms have been repeatedly targeted in recent years.
The MAE specifies that, in cooperation with specialized institutions, it will continue to ensure the protection of its digital systems and the continuity of services.
