In Krasnoyarsk, two brothers will stand trial for producing and selling counterfeit toilet paper. This was reported to the regional prosecutor's office.
According to the department, in the fall of 2023, the brothers who ran the paper companies decided to make money on someone else’s name – the well-known brand “Toilet paper from Naberezhnye Chelny,” the right to which belongs to the plant of the same name. Without the permission of the copyright holder, they organized the release of a batch of rolls without bushings – 26.5 thousand units, understanding in advance that this product would be counterfeit and could not be sold legally. Branded labels were then produced and affixed to the products for a quick profit.
“The culmination of the story was a “test purchase” at the Yenisei Privoz, where the men brought a large batch – almost 15 thousand rolls – for sale. They were detained there. An examination later established that the paper not only copied someone else’s trademark, but also did not correspond to the original products either in quality or in terms of labeling and production requirements. The damage to the copyright holder was estimated at more than half a million rubles,” the prosecutor’s office said.
One of the brothers generally admits his guilt, but claims that for many years he legally traded the original paper under a dealer agreement and decided on illegal production only once, when a profitable order appeared. The second, according to him, was only a formal director and a “technical” person who monitored the equipment, helped with repairs and sometimes passed on instructions, without delving into the production and sales process.
The prosecutor charged the brothers with illegal use of someone else's trademark (Part 2 of Article 180 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Their property, including cars, was seized, and the criminal case was sent to the Leninsky District Court.
The counterfeit has been seized and will soon be destroyed.
