Even purchasing a ready-made substrate does not guarantee complete protection against the fungal disease “blackleg”. The publication “On Retirement” advised to carry out heat treatment of the area.
The prevention method is based on a combination of high temperature and the antiseptic properties of potassium permanganate. Hot water creates unfavorable conditions for harmful microorganisms, and a solution of potassium permanganate enhances the disinfecting effect.
To properly prepare the mixture, potassium permanganate crystals are dissolved in hot water until a dark pink color is obtained. It is important to note that too concentrated a purple solution should not be used, as it may damage the plants in the future.
The resulting liquid is thoroughly poured onto the soil in the seedling containers. The procedure is carried out one day before sowing the seeds. During this time, the earth will cool down, and most of the fungal spores will die under the influence of temperature and antiseptic.
This preventive method does not require special costs and is suitable for most vegetable crops.
