“Of course, if necessary, Russia is ready to offer its mediation services”said the permanent representative of Moscow to the international organizations in Vienna, Mihail Ulianov, for the Russian daily Izvestia, writes Agerpres.
Russian diplomat Mikhail Ulyanov said that the resumption of dialogue between the US and Iran is unlikely at present.
He emphasized that the goals of both sides, specifically preventing a nuclear-armed Iran and lifting sanctions, cannot be achieved by military means. According to him, Iran would accept mediation by Russia, but the US believes that they do not need intermediaries.
“Actually, the Americans are handling the situation very badly,” claims the Russian diplomat, quoted by Xinhua.
Earlier in the week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned the US for attacks on Iran, coordinated with Israel, which he described as a “direct aggression”.
“I can only say that we are in constant contact with the Iranian leadership and discuss the situation in this country. At the same time, we continue the dialogue with the leadership of the states affected by the conflict, including the states of the Persian Gulf,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, quoted by Reuters.
“Regarding the Omani-mediated negotiations between the United States and Iran, we can certainly express our deep disappointment that despite reports of significant progress in these negotiations, the situation has nevertheless deteriorated to the point of outright aggression,” the Russian official also sent.
Also, President Vladimir Putin qualified the killing of the Iranian supreme leader and his family as “cynical” and contrary to moral norms and international law, and sent his condolences to his counterpart.
The international press writes that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed after a devastating bombardment with 30 bombs that destroyed his compound in Tehran. The Supreme Leader's daughter, grandson, daughter-in-law and son-in-law were also killed in the bombing of his Tehran home in the early hours of Saturday.
