The spokesman for the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw, Prosecutor Mateusz Martyniuk, said that Katarzyna R., acting as the president of the Orlen Foundation, in the period from November 2023 to December 2023, abused the powers granted to her by deciding to approve a written report on the use of a donation in the amount of nearly PLN 4.7 million, transferred to the Foundation for Economic Development and Innovation. Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski for the implementation of the “Academy of Civic Activity” project.

The investigators' findings show that the recipient foundation used the indicated funds “to finance a political media campaign in the national press and an outdoor media campaign (including the preparation and implementation of billboard advertisements), encouraging people to vote against (4 x NO) in the referendum held on October 15, 2023 and presenting politicians of the opposition party in a negative light.” This action is inconsistent with the statutory objectives of the Orlen Foundation.

The penalty for causing damage to business is up to 10 years in prison. Katarzyna R. pleaded not guilty and refused to provide explanations.

“The prosecutor secured the suspect's property in the form of three residential properties and one land property by encumbering them with a compulsory mortgage in the amount of over PLN 3 million,” said prosecutor Martyniuk.

The information was previously reported by “Gazeta Wyborcza”, stating that the value of the secured properties is lower than the damage caused to the foundation.

“GW” indicated that the crime was reported by Orlen's new authorities when they discovered that the money intended for charity and educational purposes was used to pay for a political campaign in 2023, which Law and Justice tried to improve its electoral result. (PAP)
