The Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan, commented on the potential effects of the conflict in the Middle East for the fuel market and assured that “we are not at risk of not having enough diesel and gasoline on the Romanian market”.
The official declared, on Monday, on Digi24, that Romania produces “approximately twice as much gasoline as we consume, which shows that we export half of the production”, so that “we will be able to continue production without having disruptions in the market”.
“In the case of diesel, we produce approximately 50% of what we consume on Romanian territory, the difference coming from India, Turkey, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. About 20% of imports come from Saudi Arabia, which we can say are affected by the events in the Strait of Hormuz. In this formula, practically, we have under some pressure only 10% of Romania's domestic diesel consumption,” added Bogdan Ivan.
“We have diversified our sources of supply”
The Minister of Energy specified that the Aramco refinery in the Saudi city of Ras Tanura, which was stopped, “is not the one that delivers to Romania”.
“The refinery that supplies Romania today is still running and operating at optimal parameters in Saudi Arabia. In the meantime, we have diversified our sources of supply and are also bringing diesel from Norway to cover part of the mix in our country”, continued Bogdan Ivan.
He said that “that 10%-14% increase in the price on the international oil market” really affects Romania as well, but here “the share of the raw material, i.e. crude oil, in the final price of a liter of diesel and gasoline represents about 25%”.
“That's because 55% are taxes and excises, and VAT, to be very fair, and the difference of 15% is the one represented by refining, transport, distribution”, he explained.

Message to citizens
Asked if the Romanian state does not want to gain from an increase in the price of fuel, considering the high share of taxes in the price, the minister denied: “Not at all. And so we are in a very inflamed period from a political, social, and economic point of view.”
“What I want to convey very clearly to the people at home is the following, we are prepared both with what we have in the operational stocks, today, at the economic operators in Romania, with the purchases made in advance, for the next months, of crude oil for the refineries in Romania, with a situation in which we will have all the stocks for at least five to six months”, he continued.
Bogdan Ivan also mentioned that the warehouses are “102% full” and there are also “reserves per transport area”.
“We are not at risk of not having enough diesel and gasoline on the Romanian market”, concluded the Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan.
