The port of Antwerp will be equipped with the NASAMS air defense system in 2027, announced the Prime Minister of Belgium, Bart De Wever, on Thursday. The installation is intended to protect key economic and logistics infrastructure. Details on the number of kits and their exact location were not disclosed.

NASAMS is a medium-range system designed to combat aircraft, helicopters, drones and some cruise missiles. Belgium cooperates with the Netherlands in this respect. The first system is to be leased from Norway, and deliveries of the sets ordered by Belgium are planned from 2028.
The number of systems and their exact location were not disclosed. The Port of Antwerp is of strategic and economic importance; supports, among others: transport of energy resources and military equipment.
Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe. It is second only to the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
