There were nuclear bombs here. We saw a secret warehouse

The discussion about Polish nuclear weapons is gaining momentum. The president said that we could even consider developing our own weapons. Weapons of destruction in Poland? This may sound controversial to many, but it would not be anything new. For many decades, we had three super-secret military units where such weapons were stored.
We visited one of three such former warehouses – Object 3001, which is located several dozen kilometers from Kołobrzeg. Unlike the other two warehouses, it is preserved quite well. On selected days, anyone can visit this facility – it houses the Cold War Museum. However, getting there is not easy. The former unit is located in the middle of the forest, you drive through uneven terrain. No wonder the individual is so far from civilization. 150 Soviet soldiers and their families once served and lived here. The assumption was that they would have no contact with the local population – who could not know what the unit was for.

Nuclear weapons were stored here in Poland
However, the museum rewards the hardships of travel for anyone who is even a little interested in history. You can see with your own eyes a warehouse where extermination weapons were probably stored in the late 1980s or early 1990s. First you have to go through a huge steel door, and then another one. Then the guide leads to large nuclear weapons warehouses.
It is impressive how well the old Soviet installations have been preserved. You can see, for example, old cranes, but also gas installations and even telephones that were used by soldiers from the USSR. But that's not all – the exhibits include specialized suits, maps showing war plans between the West and the Warsaw Pact – and even models of nuclear warheads. The original inscriptions on the walls have also been preserved.

This is surprising, because the other two facilities where the USSR troops stored nuclear weapons are currently in a terrible condition. The former Site 3002, which we also visited, for example, is just a few abandoned shelters and warehouses.

Museum and prison
The USSR's “nuclear” facilities were built in the late 1960s. It is unclear how many weapons were stored there. It is estimated that Object 3001 alone could contain 160 nuclear warheads.
At a time when discussions about nuclear weapons are returning, can it be imagined that former Soviet facilities will be used for their original purposes again? This is very doubtful. The warehouses have not been used by soldiers for a long time (the Russians left here at the end of 1992), technologies have changed. In addition, Object 3001 itself has gained a new life. Part of it serves as a museum, and in the former residential buildings for soldiers there is now… a men's prison.
