Semen Głuzman is dead. He was a respected Ukrainian psychiatrist


“Today, at the age of 79, Semen Gluzman died – a well-known psychiatrist, human rights activist, Soviet dissident and political prisoner. A bright, intelligent person,” Borzyslav Bereza, a former deputy to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, said on social media.
“In 1971, Semen Gluzman conducted an independent, extramural psychiatric forensic examination and found mentally healthy General Petr Hryhorenko – a critic of the Soviet system, who was considered paranoid and sent for compulsory treatment to a psychiatric hospital,” wrote the Zhyttia portal, part of the Ukrayinskaya Pravda media network.

In 1972, Głuzman was arrested in connection with publications in the underground press, and then sentenced to seven years in a labor camp and an additional three years of exile. He regained his freedom in 1982.

After his release, he worked in Kiev as a factory worker, and in 1985 he returned to his professional and journalistic activities. From 1991, he was the executive secretary of the Association of Psychiatrists of Ukraine and one of the authors of the Law of Ukraine on psychiatric assistance.
Głuzman was a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Great Britain, the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the German Society of Psychiatry and Neurology. In 1998-1999 he worked as a UN human rights expert.
