Polish President Karol Nawrocki believes that his country should start developing a nuclear defense, given the threat from Moscow, writes POLITICO.
In an interview given to Polsat television on Sunday, Nawrocki described himself as “a great supporter of Poland's accession to the nuclear project” and argued that the country should develop its security strategy “based on nuclear potential”, News.ro quotes.
He added: “This path, in compliance with all international regulations, is the path we should follow. (…) We have to work in this direction, to be able to start the works. We are a country located right on the border of an armed conflict. Russia's aggressive and imperialist attitude towards Poland is well known.”
His comments come amid an increasingly intense debate in several European countries over the development of their own nuclear weapons, in the context of growing threats from Moscow and eroding trust in the United States.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina, for example, told the Munich Security Conference this weekend that “nuclear deterrence can offer new opportunities.”
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that discussions are underway with France about a European deterrent.
Asked how Moscow might react to a Polish nuclear weapons program, Karol Nawrocki was dismissive: “Russia can react aggressively to anything,” he said.
