This effect is produced by the yellow food coloring tartrazine (FD&C Yellow 5), which is used in Fanta, Haribo and Skittles. It changes the properties of the skin, allowing light to penetrate deeper into the tissue. Researchers can now observe blood vessels, intestines and even the brain mice without the use of MRI, CT, or surgery.
It is noted that the effect is completely reversible and safe for animals. Scientists believe that the discovery will simplify experiments, since it will no longer be necessary to use X-rays to study internal organs.
