The Opel Mokka GS impresses with its design and hybrid. Is it a hit among city SUVs?

One thing is certain. The Opel Mokka GS looks impressive, especially in the version with a two-color body. Even black and white, as in the test copy. The front fascia with grill and headlights looks great, and the black aluminum rims also add charm. It may not be Alfa Romeo styling, but the Mokka is still eye-catching.
There is some modern technology in the cabin, but also a handful of analog solutions. For example, in the GS – this is basically the top version – we have digital gauges with a 10-inch screen and a central touch screen with the same diagonal. Despite this, there are still physical knob buttons and buttons to operate the air conditioning and some basic functions. Way to go! Common sense sometimes prevails.

In addition, there is no shortage of eye-catching details dedicated to the GS version. These include upholstery intended only for this variant and a black headliner. The seats themselves are very comfortable, and there is a lot of space in the front, even though we are dealing with a city car. The situation is slightly worse in the back: children will certainly travel there very comfortably, but tall people may complain about too little legroom.

And the trunk? In this respect, Mokka does not stand out from the competition: it has a volume of 350 liters. However, this is not enough for family holiday trips.

Opel Mokka – a soft hybrid
Moreover, the Mokka's drive is also designed for city driving, not on the highway. It is a 1.2 engine with a power of 136 HP and a 28 HP electric unit supporting it. In total, we get 145 HP at the output, which is quite a lot. The intermediary between the power unit and the front wheels is the 6-speed eDC6 gearbox. This version of the Opel Mokka can run “on electricity” at low speeds (e.g. in a parking lot or in a traffic jam), which – as in every hybrid – reduces fuel consumption. Realistically, in the city, we can count on a result of 5.5 l/100 km, which is a reasonable value, but not great. Small Toyota hybrids consume less, and the new hybrid drive used in Renault and Dacia is also more economical.

And what will it be like on the route? At 120 km/h, the fuel consumption will increase to over 7 l/100 km, while on the highway we will approach 9 l/100 km. Well, a small engine is usually not very economical at high speeds, as a fast drive in the Opel Mokka proves.

On the plus side: the Mokka with 145 horsepower is quite a dynamic car in the city: it accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds. It also willingly increases the speed when, for example, you need to accelerate from 50 to 80 km/h. There are roads with higher speed limits in cities. Thanks to the electric engine, the Mokka starts smoothly and the reactions to the gas are quick. There is no need to wait for the turbine to start.

Opel Mokka – is it worth buying?
Opel Mokka is a very nice car, which in the quite expensive GS version (from PLN 130,000), looks great and is richly equipped. In fact, it is difficult to find features that would actually distinguish the small Opel SUV. There is a lot of competition on the market, and some brands also care about the appearance of their models and additionally offer more space inside. However, the hybrid Opel Mokka is certainly a step in the right direction, which will allow this model to compete for customers again.
