Lindsey Vonn (41) is pushing the limits of performance sports. The alpine skiing legend has announced that he will fight for his fifth Winter Olympics, despite recently suffering a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
The American athlete was injured last Friday, during the downhill test in Crans-Montana (Switzerland), stage of the World Cup.
Serious accident at Crans-Montana
“In the last World Cup race, I completely tore my ACL. I also have a bone bruise, a fairly common injury. I did intensive therapy, I talked to the doctors, I went to the gym and today I went skiing. The knee is stable and I feel strong,” said Vonn, quoted by Olympics.com.
Despite the harsh medical verdict, the American does not consider retiring:
“I know what my chances were before the fall, and I know they're not the same now. But there's still a chance. And as long as there's a chance, I'm going to fight,” Vonn said.
Vonn is already back on skis
Although the injury is extremely serious, Lindsey Vonn is already back on skis, just a few days after the incident. The athlete confirmed that, at the moment, she does not feel pain.
“It was painful right after the fall. I felt it was something serious, but I held out hope until I saw the MRI. I didn't cry, I didn't deviate from my plan,” she said in a press conference, as quoted by the Associated Press.
“I think I can still fight and I will do everything in my power to be at the startVonn said, and for the 41-year-old skiing star to be able to participate, she must complete at least one official training session. The first will take place on February 5. After the downhill race, the 41-year-old athlete will decide whether she can also compete in the Super-G event, scheduled for Thursday.
