White-handed gibbons are the only animals that can produce melodies of pure tones, like humans. They have this unusual feature from birth, and they do not specifically learn to sing. The animals have a special “musical instrument” – the throat sac, which plays the role of a sound resonator, thanks to which the morning singing of the gibbon can be easily heard at a distance of hundreds of meters from the place of performance. The singing of these musicians begins early in the morning, at about 6 o'clock, and can last for a couple of hours.
