World champions Denmark were beaten by two goals to Portugal 29-31 in Herning on Tuesday 20 January in a Group B match of the European Men's Handball Championship.
Huge surprise in Romania's EURO 2026 group. After drawing with North Macedonia, Portugal had a stunning performance against Denmark, the winner of the last 4 editions of the World Championship, and achieved a huge victory on the opponent's field.
Portugal, unstoppable offensive against Denmark! Mathias Gidsel, overtaken by the Costa brothers
The game was balanced from the start and, at halftime, the Lusitanians were leading by one goal, 12-11, but everyone was expecting a comeback from the northerners in the second half. The Danes confirmed expectations in the first minutes of the second half and took the lead.
However, Portugal did not give up and, led by the Costa brothers, had a splendid offensive performance in Denmark. Mathias Gidsel, the home team's superstar, tried to give the world champions the victory all by himself, but even he missed from two actions in which he was left alone with the goalkeeper.
At the other gate, Emil Nielsen was unable to stop the two Costa brothers and in the end Portugal prevailed 31-29achieving a success that earned him the first position in the preliminary group B.
Francisco and Martim Costa each scored 9 goals, Antonio Areia managed 6 goals and Luis Frade stood out with 4 goals.
On the other side, Mathias Gidsel collected 8 goals, Simon Pytlick managed 6 goals and Rasmus Lauge scored 4 times.
