Barcelona and Real Madrid, the teams trained by Hansi Flick and Xabi Alonso, met tonight at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Saudi Arabia in the first “El Clasico” of 2026 with the Spanish Super Cup trophy on the table. It was episode number 263 of the historic rivalry, and the Catalans prevailed, score 3-2, after an incendiary match, marked by an absolutely crazy end of the first half.
Barcelona started the game with a clear control of possession, patiently passing and pushing the play towards the Madrid box. The first dangerous phase belonged to the Catalans, when Kounde attempted a cross from the right for Lewandowski, but Huijsen intervened providentially. Real responded timidly, through a corner obtained rather from a defensive phase of the opponent.
Barcelona's dominance took shape in the 36th minute, when Raphinha, immediately after a missed opportunity, was excellently served by Lamine Yamal on the right flank. The Brazilian finished without emotion with a shot into the side netting to open the scoring and confirm Catalan control.
THREE goals in first half overtime
The end of the first half, however, turned into a real show. Real Madrid equalized in minute 45+2, through Vinicius Junior, who took advantage of an action started by Gonzalo Garcia. The Brazilian broke into the box, went past several opponents and executed the goalkeeper with a placed shot, restoring balance to the scoreboard.
Barcelona's response was immediate. In the 45+4th minute, Lewandowski was released perfectly by Pedri and managed a fine execution, lobbing Courtois out between the sticks, the ball hitting the crossbar before going into the goal. However, the joy of the Catalans was short-lived, because Real Madrid equalized again, in the 45th+6th minute, after a corner.
The ball found its way to Gonzalo Garcia, who finished powerfully from inside the box to make it an incredible 2-2 at half-time after three goals in just a few minutes.
Kylian Mbappe was brought on in the last quarter of an hour and caused a send-off
The second half was more balanced, with Barcelona continuing to control the game but Real dangerous in transition. The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute, when Dani Olmo passed to Raphinha on the edge of the box. The Brazilian attempted a sliding shot, the ball was deflected by Asencio and tricked Courtois, who dived in for the initial execution. Raphinha thus scored his “double” and scored the decisive goal for the Catalans.
Shortly after, in the 76th minute, Kylian Mbappe entered the field, returning from injury, in place of Gonzalo Garcia, one of Real's best men, with a goal and an assist. The end of the match was tense and in the 90+1 minute Barcelona were reduced to ten men after Frenkie de Jong was sent off for a rough tackle on Mbappe.
The Catalans, ten victories and the 16th Supercup in the showcase
Even in numerical inferiority, the Catalans resisted until the end and conquered the Spanish Supercup, ticking off the 16th trophy in this competition, the second in a row, after the one won in the 2024/25 season.
The win extends Barcelona's excellent run to ten consecutive successes in all competitions, with 29 goals scored and only 8 conceded. The last failure of the Catalans dates back to November 25, 2025, 0-3 against Chelsea in the Champions League.
On the other side, Real Madrid was coming after five consecutive victories and after the close success of the semi-final with Atletico, score 2-1, but this time they had to admit defeat in an “El Clasico” that offered a lot of spectacle.
