“The championship is great, but too much pressure is put on”

Filipe Coelho, 45 years old, two months at the helm of the University of Craiova, speaks with admiration about the Romanian championship and the potential of the local players, whom he considers talented and able to grow a lot. At the same time, he warns that they need more support and a more empathetic climate.

The surrounding pressure, whether from clubs, media or supporters, is, in his opinion, sometimes excessive and forgets that footballers are first of all people, with families and sensitivities. Coelho does not look for direct blame, but sends a strong message: the players must be protected and respected, because they are the center of this game.

The championship has value, and the potential is there; how we treat those who play it can make the difference.

VIDEO. Filipe Coelho: “I feel there is too much pressure on the players”

– Is there anything you don't like in Romania?
– I can't tell you that. I prefer not to say. I'll tell you eventually. I think you should take more care of the Romanian players. They are very good and have huge potential, but some people do not do this, do not support children and do not accept their mistakes. The championship is very, very good. I'm not talking about my team or any other team, but more support is needed! The championship is extraordinary, the players are very, very good, they have a lot of potential, but sometimes I feel, from the outside, that there is too much pressure on the players. I think he deserves more respect.

– Are you talking about the media, fans or clubs?
– I am talking about what I saw and felt. I always work with them and it is important to respect the players more, they are the most important in football! Sometimes we write and say things and we can't forget that they are not just players, they are people. They have families, they have children and I think sometimes it is not easy for them to read and accept some things. It's my opinion, maybe after this interview some may not agree, and that's OK, but it's important to realize that. We have to take care of the players. They are the most important.
