A man arrested in Sweden this week on espionage charges is suspected of passing information to the Russian secret service, the prosecutor in the case announced on Friday, according to AFP.
The Stockholm District Court remanded the 33-year-old Swede in custody on charges of espionage, but few details had emerged in the public space regarding the nature of the operations in which he was involved.
“The preliminary investigation is at an early stage. Currently, the investigation indicates that the suspect helped the Russian intelligence service,” prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said in a statement.
“As the preliminary investigation is ongoing, and the parties involved are bound by an order of silence, no further comments can be offered,” the Prosecutor's Office stated in a statement.
According to court documents, the alleged offenses took place between January 1, 2025 and January 4, 2026, when the man was arrested.
The man worked as an IT consultant for the Swedish army from 2018 to 2022, an army spokesman told AFP.
The man's lawyer, Hanna Lindblom, told reporters Wednesday that he denied any involvement in espionage.
In 2024, the man founded a company specializing in cyber security, which, according to public records, aimed to focus on “offensive cyber operations”.
