Cluj University announced on Friday that it has made the first move of this winter, reaching an agreement with Sampdoria for the loan of Andrei Coubiș (22 years old), a Romanian defender with dual Romanian and Italian citizenship.

The agreement also includes a purchase option.

“Born in Milan on September 29, 2003, Coubiș played in the juniors for the club Polisportiva Lombardia Uno, and since 2019 he is a player for AC Milan. In the first season with the U17 team of the “Rossoneri”, Coubiș made ten appearances, and in the following season he made the transition to the Primavera team, for which he ticked 16 matches, playing another three matches for the U18 group” wrote those from U Cluj in a press release.

The club claims that “Coubiș's role in Milan's youth team was strengthened in the 2021-2022 competition year, when the central defender made his appearance in 33 domestic competitions and made his UEFA Youth League debut in a duel with Liverpool (0-1), managing to collect four more appearances in the most prestigious junior competition at club level”.

“Coubiș continued on the same note in the 2022-2023 season, in which he played in 33 matches in all competitions, scoring his first goal in the UEFA Youth League, in the draw with Salzburg (1-1), from the position of captain, which he retained throughout the season. The summer of 2024 naturally brought Coubiș's move to AC Milan's U23 team, called Milan Futuro, for which he performed in 34 games in Serie C (1 goal)”, added those from “U”.

The Cluj players specified that “in the first part of the 2025/2026 season, the Romanian defender was loaned to Sampdoria, in Serie B”, and before that he had been called up to AC Milan's first team in the friendlies with Chelsea and Leeds.

“At the national team level, Coubiș has no less than nine matches in the jersey of the U19 national team of Romania, along with two other appearances for the U20 national team and an appearance in the U21 team of our country. Later, he was called up to the Italian U20 national team, but without making his debut in the jersey of the country in which he was born”, according to Friday's press release from the University of Cluj.

GSP explained that, simultaneously with Cluj's announcement, AC Milan announced that they had sold Coubiș to Sampdoria, so the “red caps” will have to negotiate with the Genoese to buy him.
