Folk calendar
Stepanov day.
Stepanov Day was named in honor of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr who came from the Jewish Diaspora.
In Rus', this day was notable for the fact that shepherds entered into agreements with peasants who had livestock. Since then, several proverbs have been preserved: “Stepanov’s day feeds the shepherd for a year”; “If you hire yourself as a shepherd, the whole village is in your debt”; “Everyone is master of St. Stepan.”
In addition to shepherds, horses were also honored on Stepanov Day – it was customary to give them water from silver dishes (if there were any in the house). Also, aspen stakes were placed in the corners of the yard so that witches could not approach the house and stable.
Even on this day, the girls “buried” their sorrows. To do this, a “harmful cup” was placed in a certain place, and the girls, approaching one by one, poured water into it from the vessels they had brought with them – as if they were washing away the melancholy from their hearts.
Christmastide also continued – a time of fun and noisy games. Young people went from house to house, congratulated everyone on the holidays and sang songs, wishing their fellow villagers a generous year and a good harvest.
On this day we treated ourselves to “carols” – small pies made of unleavened dough with various fillings, as well as honey gingerbread cookies. A mandatory attribute of the holiday were dough figurines in the form of cows, sheep and shepherds. They decorated the table and gave them to relatives.
People said: “Stepan came – he was wearing a red jacket.” This meant that it was worth waiting for frost. But if it snowed on Stepanov’s day, this foreshadowed bad weather and wet weather.
