Legendary Tottenham footballer Martin Chivers has died aged 80. The Englishman was a formidable striker, ranking fourth in Spurs' all-time scoring charts with 174 goals in 367 official games.
Chivers arrived at the London club in 1968 from Southampton for £125,000, a British transfer record at the time.

With Spurs, he won the UEFA Cup and twice triumphed in the League Cup. He spent 8 seasons at Tottenham, and in the entire history of the club, only Harry Kane (with 280), Jimmy Greaves (with 268) and Bobby Smith (with 208) scored more goals than him. He registered 24 caps and 13 goals for the England national team.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker, Martin Chivers,” read Tottenham's official statement.
“At this incredibly sad time, we send our deepest condolences to Martin's family, friends and former teammates. Our players will be wearing black armbands during tonight's game against Bournemouth. Rest in peace, Martin. One of the greatest of all time“.
Martin Chivers started his career at Southampton in 1962 and arrived at Tottenham in 1968, where he played until 1976. Servette, Norwich City, Brighton, Dorchester Town, Frankston City, Haugesund followed and he ended his playing career at Barnet in the 1982-83 season. For the first representative of the England national team, Chivers ticked off 24 matches, during which he scored 13 times.
