Fuel oil killed almost all living creatures on the bottom of the Black Sea in the area of the tanker wreck. Millions of crabs, rapans, mollusks and jellyfish died in the black slurry.
According to Mash, the substance sank to the bottom due to the cold. While it is there, all living things will die. Volunteers find crabs and rapana in fuel oil every day. And if you can still try to clean the crabs, with rapana everything is much more complicated – the shells are completely filled with fuel oil, the mollusks immediately die. According to experts, it is impossible to count the destroyed living creatures; the number is hundreds of thousands of individuals. And in the spring, the carcasses of dead fish will begin to float up.
The ecologist told us: everything will return to normal when the concentration of fuel oil becomes acceptable for fauna to live. The underwater world, like the sand, will take at least 10 years to recover.
