Folk calendar

Fedulov day

The day got its name in honor of St. Theodulus. He lived in Thessalonica in the 3rd century, when the emperors Diocletian and Maximilian carried out severe persecutions of Christians.

In Rus', on this day, much attention was paid to domestic animals – cattle and poultry. The kind owner showed special care towards them – he gave them a lot of food, put things in order in the barn and poultry house.

On this day, cookies were baked in the shape of sheep, cows and birds. This was done in order to attract good spirits and drive out evil ones. And so that evil spirits did not leave a mark on the baked goods, they immediately wrapped them in a towel. They did the same with Lenten flatbreads, which were also customary to prepare on Fedulov (Feodulov) day. True, unlike cookies, flatbreads were not served to the table – they were taken to the barn, where they were fed piece by piece to the animals. Poultry received selected grain as a treat.

People noticed that the weather on Fedulov's day predicted the weather in November. “Fedul came – the wind blew,” they said in Rus'. The wind was considered a good omen – it promised a rich harvest.
