Premier League standings

Bournemouth – Arsenal, in the 20th round of the Premier League

Bournemouth kick off the new year by taking on the leaders in their longest single-season winless streak in the club's history in the top flight.

Andoni Iraola's side have failed to win any of their last 10 league games and, although Bournemouth came back from 0-1 down to get a point at Stamford Bridge in the last leg (2-2 with Chelsea), they start 2026 in 15th place in the table with just five wins this season.

Such a dip in form is perhaps not entirely unexpected for a club that sold 10 players last summer, including three of Bournemouth's four favorite defenders, for a profit of more than £81m.

The next player to leave the club will almost certainly be Antoine Semenyo. The player has a £65m release clause which became active in the January transfer window, and the home game against Arsenal could be his last game before leaving the club. Manchester City being, according to sources, in negotiations for his services.

Bournemouth have won both of their league games against Arsenal in the 2024-25 season, but their chances of repeating last season's triumph at the Vitality Stadium are slim, with the away side having lost just once in their last 16 league games.

Arsenal are in great form

The Gunners ended New Year's Day with a four-point lead at the top of the standings following Arsenal's 4-1 win over Aston Villa and Manchester City's goalless draw at Sunderland on Thursday night.

However, the title race remains wide open. It is the sixth time Arsenal have topped the Premier League table at the end of New Year's Day and on all five previous occasions they have failed to win the title.
