The rescuers from Braşov warn again about the risks to which those who climb the mountain are exposed during this period, when the wind speed reaches, at high altitudes, over 110 kilometers per hour. According to the rescuers, bad weather can “quickly generate critical situations, such as disorientation, serious accidents, hypothermia or being stuck in hard-to-reach areas”, informs News.ro.
The mountain rescuers from the Salvamont Braşov County Service once again draw attention to the “major risks” existing in the mountain area, in conditions where the wind blows strongly at high altitudes. Rescuers “strongly recommend” avoiding any travel in the mountains during this period.
“Strong intensifications of the wind are forecast, with gusts that can exceed 100-110 km/h at high altitudes, blizzards, snow accumulations and extremely low visibility. These conditions can quickly generate critical situations, such as disorientation, serious accidents, hypothermia or blocking in hard-to-reach areas. Moreover, the evolution of meteorological phenomena is dynamic, and warnings can be extended or intensified, which further amplifies the danger for people on the trails or outside the developed areas”, is the message of Salvamont Braşov.
Mountain rescuers draw attention to the fact that rescue interventions can be “seriously difficult or even impossible” in certain intervals, endangering both the people in difficulty and the intervention teams.
“We make a clear call for responsibility and compliance with the recommendations of the authorities, urging tourists to postpone travel and mountain activities until the weather conditions improve and to obtain information exclusively from official sources. Safety must remain a priority before any intention to set out on the road,” the mountain rescuers add.
And the Secretary of State in the Ministry of the Environment Raul Pop says that, given that Romania is “in an episode of genuine winter”, with strong intensification of the wind, which can reach up to 130-140 km/h in the mountain areas, heavy snow and areas with reduced visibility, it is very important for tourists to show increased attention if they are in the areas under a weather warning, to avoid mountain routes and to keep in touch with Salvamont.
“The local authorities receive all the warnings and will transmit them, according to the procedures, also to the tourism operators, and ANM will issue, punctually, where the situation requires it, Code Red nowcasting warnings, so that the population avoids the areas where extreme weather phenomena can occur”, emphasized Raul Pop.
