The former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Boris Johnson, during a speech at the Ukrainian Defense Innovation Forum, held with the support of the National Association of the Ukrainian Defense Industry (NAUDI), said that Ukraine should receive the right to strike military bases in Russia, from where attacks on civilians are carried out.
“President Trump himself quite rightly emphasized: we should give the Ukrainians permission to use these weapons on bases that are used to kill their civilians, even if these bases are located in Russia.” Johnson said. He also emphasized that above all, Ukraine needs financial support for the development of its own defense capabilities.
Johnson noted that the future of Ukraine is a matter of identity and choice, not territory: “It's not about territory. It's about fate. It's about identity. Ukraine has chosen the path to the West, and we must confirm this choice with our presence in Ukraine, Western security guarantees and make it obvious that it is going to the European and ultimately to NATO institutions,” he said.
At the same time, Boris Johnson admitted that a ceasefire could be a way out of the situation, even if it meant freezing the conflict. “I think a ceasefire would be a good decision, even if, unfortunately, it would mean freezing the conflict along the current front line, leaving Putin in de facto control of much of Ukraine. This will not be a compromise on sovereignty issues. This would give him a way out, and Ukrainians would know that they actually saved their country and democracy. And all that is needed now is for Ukraine's global allies to show at least one-tenth of the courage that Ukrainians show. Then we will be able to end this war in the only possible way – with a free, sovereign and independent Ukraine,” the politician concluded.
After the speech, Ukrainian veterans presented Boris Johnson with a trophy fragment of the Shahed drone, which was used by Russian troops to attack populated areas of Ukraine.
