A fire at a nightclub in the popular Indian tourist region of Goa has killed at least 25 people, including four tourists, local officials said, according to CNN.

According to the first information cited by CNN News18, the fire started after an explosion of a gas cylinder in the kitchen area of the club, in the village of Arpora, around midnight on Saturday.

Fourteen of the victims were reportedly staff members. The nationalities of the tourists have not yet been confirmed, police told an English-language Indian news outlet.

Authorities also said seven people were being treated for injuries, including one with burns over 60 percent of her body, he added.

Some of the victims died of burns, while others died of suffocation, News18 reported.

Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane wrote on X that the injured were taken to Goa Medical College and Hospital and were receiving the “best possible medical care”, with teams working through the night.

“My thoughts go out to all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover as soon as possible”, said the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

Indian media reported that authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and whether fire safety and building codes were followed.

The first information suggests that the premises did not have a mandatory certificate for operation and violated fire regulations, the director of Fire and Emergency Services, Nitin Raiker, told News18 on Sunday.

About 5.5 million tourists, including 271,000 from abroad, visited Goa in the first half of the year, according to government data.
