Harvard historian Serhii Plokhiy supported the NBU's idea of reviving the shagu.
He visited the National Bank and the Museum of Money and expressed his support for the initiative of the head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andrii Pyshnyi, to return the Ukrainian step to circulation. According to Plokhiy, this issue has a deep meaning for identity and demonstrates how Russia has been imposing foreign symbols and values on Ukrainians for centuries.
Andriy Pishnyi emphasized that it is not just about money reform, but about historical justice and de-occupation of money circulation. The kopeck, which appeared in Ukraine together with the tsarist troops in the 17th century, became a symbol of the “Russian world”. Displacing it and reviving the shag means strengthening Ukrainian subjectivity and providing protection against future manipulations.

“For me, the revival of the shag is not only a story about the completion of the monetary reform. This is about the return of Ukrainian subjectivity, about armor against manipulation and about strengthening our own “I”, — emphasized Pyshnyi.
