What to do if there is a fire
“If, as a result of an air attack, the exit from the apartment is blocked and a fire breaks out, we move to the next room, making sure to close the door behind us, isolating ourselves from the effects of dangerous harmful substances and thermal radiation,” explained Yuriy Osmina, inspector of the Vyshgorod district department of the State Emergency Service in the Kyiv region. “Then, calling the fire and rescue units at 101, we open the window. Thus, we give access to fresh air.”
If there is no phone, you need to call for help from the window.
How to put out a fire yourself
If the flame is small, you can try to put it out yourself, but to do this you need to buy a fire extinguisher in advance. Water, water-foam or powder is best. You can also use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, which is suitable for extinguishing solids and live electrical equipment.
Don't lock the front door
The State Emergency Service advised not to lock the doors during Russian attacks on peaceful Ukrainian cities – in case of a hit, it will be easier for rescuers to enter the premises.
How to safely leave an apartment where a fire has started
According to Osmina, since combustion products rise to the ceiling, in order to safely leave the apartment, you need to go as low as possible to the floor. Moving towards the exit, you need to cover your respiratory organs with a cloth.
You can evacuate from a house engulfed in fire only by stairs and under no circumstances use the elevator. Rescuers advise not to jump out of windows in a stressful situation – a balcony can become a temporary shelter.
