The head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, asked on Wednesday to reduce the size and budget of the Russian army, in order to end the war in Ukraine, while, in the context in which the United States proposed a peace plan that foresees at one point the reduction of the Ukrainian armed forces, and Brussels is examining new sanctions against Russia.

“If we want to prevent the continuation of this war, then we must reduce the Russian army and also its military budget”, said Kaja Kallas at a press conference, after a virtual meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU states to discuss the peace plan proposed by the USA, reports EFE and Agerpres news agencies.

When a country allocates “about 40%” of its national budget to its army, “this means that it wants to use it again”, believes Kaja Kallas, former head of the Estonian government and who is on a list of the Russian authorities with persons given to follow, after in this position and in the current one as head of EU diplomacy, she supported the harshest measures against Russia.

“The emphasis must be placed on the concessions and limitations imposed on Russia”

“This is a threat to all of us and this is the reason why the focus should be on the concessions that Russia will make”, the head of EU diplomacy also believes, who specified that she does not agree with the limitation of the Ukrainian army forces proposed in the draft American peace plan. The emphasis must be placed on the concessions and limitations imposed on Russia, “so that it does not go further and does not have the possibility to invade again”, insisted Kallas.

In order for the war in Ukraine not to repeat itself or to “continue and expand further”, it is necessary to “have a just and lasting peace”, she indicated. “I will fight for this as long as I can, because I think it is also a matter of wider interest for European security. If the aggression gives results, it will serve as an invitation to use aggression again in other parts, and this is a threat to everyone in the world, especially to small countries,” the head of EU diplomacy also claimed.

She cited in support of her reasoning a statement by the Belgian politician Paul-Henri Spaak, considered one of the founding fathers of the EU, who said that in Europe “there are only two types of countries: the small ones and the ones that have not yet realized that they are small”.
