The head of the Ministry of National Defense comments on cooperation with Sweden in the construction of ships. “We won't waste a moment”
— When signing a contract for Orka ships, we must remember that this order requires time for its implementation. These ships will be built in Sweden and with the participation of Polish shipyards. But it takes time. Until then, we want our sailors to be able to train on a newer ship than ours. Training in Sweden will begin next year, and in 2027 the “gap filler” will serve our sailors. This shows that we will not waste even a moment — said Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, deputy prime minister and head of the Ministry of National Defense, at a press conference. He added that Sweden most convinced the Polish authorities with its offer.
As the Armament Agency reported earlier in a statement to the TVP.Info portal, all countries to which inquiries were sent responded in accordance with the established procedure. The proposals also included the so-called bridging options, i.e. the possibility of renting a ship for the duration of the construction of the target unit.
Ultimately, the government decided to entrust this mission to Saab. The contract is worth at least several billion zlotys.

The Prime Minister of Sweden on cooperation with Poland: together we strengthen our part of the world
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also spoke on this matter. As he stated, the decision to choose Saab as a manufacturer of submarines for Poland is an asset not only for cooperation between our countries, but for all of Sweden as a country of defense industry.
“This confirms the strong position of the Swedish defense industry. Saab has the world's leading submarine program. Poland and Sweden have a deep shared understanding of European security challenges. Together, Sweden and Poland will take greater responsibility for security in the Baltic Sea. We are currently significantly deepening our political, defense and industrial cooperation. In an uncertain time for our entire region, we together strengthen our part of the world” wrote the Swedish Prime Minister on the X platform.

The Orka program will replace ORP “Orzeł”
Plans to add new submarines to the navy are almost two decades old. Today, the 40-year-old ORP “Orzeł” is in service. This is a well-used unit that was built at the Soviet shipyard Krasnoye Sormovo in Gorki.
ORP “Orzeł” entered the Gdynia Naval Port in June 1986 and is today one of the oldest ships of this type in the world and the only submarine in our Navy.
