
“They thought that a war had begun” – this is how eyewitnesses recall the worst railway disaster in the USSR. On June 4, 1989, near Ufa, two trains were traveling towards each other. Suddenly there is an explosion, the cars scatter along the embankment, the fire engulfs the entire forest and land in the area. 575 people died – and this is only official. The fire and high temperature literally turned the bodies into ashes, so not all of them could be identified.
