Romania's national team will play away on March 26, the semi-final leg of the 2026 World Championship play-off against Turkey, and at the internal level a decision can be made to favor the preparation of the “tricolors” before a crucial match, with a Super League stage likely to be postponed, so that Lucescu and his students have more time to work out the details before the match with Turkey.
Immediately after Thursday's draw in Zurich, Vincenzo Montella, the Turkey coach, said he would like the Turkish federation to postpone the championship stage before the play-offs to give them more time to prepare for the match. Romania could do the same. At that time, there will be a play-off and a play-out in the Superliga, but there is a possibility that that round will be postponed and played at a later date, after the play-offs.
If there will not be time for the matches in that round to be rescheduled, the season would be extended by one stage or the Romanian Cup schedule modified.
Justin Ștefan, the general secretary of the LPF, and Orlando Nicoară, the general director of eAD, the holder of the TV rights for the Superliga, were asked if they would accept a change in the championship schedule so that the Romanian national team would have more time to prepare the match, and the two answered in the affirmative. However, in order to make such a change, it is necessary for the selector Mircea Lucescu to ask for it in advance.
Justin Ștefan accepts that the Superliga stage before the playoffs be postponed
“To the extent that the Federation and the technical team will submit such a request to us, we will analyze it. Certainly, to the extent that they want to postpone a stage, I think that we, and the television stations, will take this issue into consideration and try to find rescheduling solutions.
Now, it remains to be seen whether these reprogramming solutions exist. We will see at that time. At the moment, we do not have an official request, but given the past experience, it is possible that those who run the technical area of the national team and the coach want this matter.
Of course we will look for solutions together with the televisions. I suppose the coach will look at it and see if he needs a possible delay to get the players available sooner, that's ultimately the goal.
To the extent that there will be such a request, we will analyze together with the television representatives what reprogramming options we have.
If there are no windows available, we'll see if we can stretch a bit more with the completion of the championship.
Clearly, we will have to analyze this matter together with the Federation, that there are also dates for the Romanian Cup, what are their dates. So, it will be a three-way dialogue”, said Justin Ștefan, quoted by prosport.ro.
We don't have to think about it, because it's a decision that the Federation can make together with the Professional Football League. If the two institutions agree and decide this and data is found to play that stage, obviously we cannot disagree.
The decision is at FRF and LPF. They should just let us know when exactly that stage will be played. We also agreed with the postponement of the matches of the teams in the European cups. After all, it is a qualification for Romanian football. We cannot resist
– Orlando Nicoară, general director of eAD
If it passes Turkey, Romania will play the World Cup final on March 31, also away, against the winner of the Slovakia – Kosovo match, for a place in the final tournament next summer. The World Championship in the USA, Canada and Mexico will take place next year between June 11 and July 19.
