Lando Norris, the leader of the general classification in Formula 1, ended the second session of free practice in Las Vegas, one marked by uncertainties, at the top of the classification.
The confusion began minutes before the start of the session, when a light rain drenched the “Sin City”, but not enough to force the drivers to use rain tires, according to sportal.bg. The track subsequently dried and the drivers ran their standard schedules, including the qualifying simulations on the soft tyres.
During these simulations, however, the session was interrupted just over 20 minutes before the end due to an alleged problems with a channel cover in the last corner of the trackthe fastest in Formula 1.
About 15 minutes later practice resumed, but the drivers still had no chance to record fast laps. The session was stopped again, also due to a track problem.
Lando Norris, fastest in twice-interrupted practice in Las Vegas
Before these two interruptions, Lando Norris managed to record a time of 1:33.602 on the soft tyres, ahead of Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 0.029 seconds.
He ranked third, with a difference of 0.161 seconds the fastest driver in today's first practice session, Charles Leclercwho however was one of the many drivers whose best result was recorded in the initial phase of the session, on medium tyres.
For the Monegasque, the session also ended with a breakdown that forced him to stop the car on the side of the track shortly after the restart. In the end, the Ferrari driver lost none of the action as after the second red flag, the session was not restarted.
Behind Leclerc, Nico Hülkenberg and Isack Hadjar were fourth and fifth, and last year's Las Vegas winner Liam Lawson, George Russell, Alex Albon, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton also entered the top 10.
Oscar Piastri, in the second half of the ranking
Among the drivers in the first half of the standings, only Norris, Antonelli, Hülkenberg, Hadjar, Lawson and Albon completed laps on the soft tyres.
Formula 1 runner-up Oscar Piastri was also among the drivers who failed to complete a clean fast lap on the soft set-up.
The Australian was just starting one such tour when the race director stopped the session for the first timeand eventually Piastri finished 14th, 0.891 seconds behind his McLaren team-mate Norris.
Apart from the two red flags, there were no significant incidents in the second practice session either. As in the first practice session, in the second too, numerous drivers left the track in the braking zones, but all of them managed to avoid the impact with the walls, taking advantage of the fairly wide safety zones.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend, the 22nd round of the 2025 Formula 1 season, continues tomorrow morning at 02:30 with the final free practice session on the streets of the “Sin City”.
