The dire warning of a well-known mayor: In 2026, “the increase in fees and taxes will be 75.25%”

The PSD mayor of Buzău, Constantin Toma, said on Monday, November 17, that the Bolojan government's proposal for the collection of local taxes next year foresees a 75% increase, of which 5.25% is added as a percentage of last year's inflation.

He specified to Digi24 that Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan spoke to them at the General Assembly of the Association of Municipalities in Romania about three packages of measures “in the fiscal area, in the administration area and in the area of investments”.

“On the investment side, if you want to go with “Anghel Saligny” in the future, you will have to have a 20% contribution, which is interesting. The year 2026 looks very bad and only from 2027 can you see a little light at the end of the tunnel. But next year will be a very difficult year”commented Toma.

“So the increase in fees and taxes will be 75.25%. But a problem for us, and of course we do not agree, all this money will practically go to the Government to cover the deficit. It will remain with us, but we will no longer be given the full share of that 63%. It is that tax per share of the income tax. For this reason, we must be very careful about staff expenses, which are the highest in any town hall in Romania.”he added.

“Next week will be the hiring of responsibility for this package on the administration, of which the 10% reduction in the wage envelope is being considered, which you can do in two ways. Either you fire people, or you reduce salaries or other personnel expenses. Other personnel expenses are difficult to say”Constantin Toma also said.

On Monday, Ilie Bolojan announced that it is very possible that next week he will start the procedures for hiring responsibility for the package regarding the local and central administration.

“After too long a period, I say, we nevertheless agreed, in principle, on this important package, which means not only reductions in expenses in the administration, but also strengthening the administration's capacity to do its job, and it is very possible that next week, I think, we will start the procedures for hiring responsibility for this package regarding the local and central administration.

I will not refer to the central administration, because you are not directly interested (..) but on the two administrations, the proposal contained in this draft law is a 10% reduction in expenses”, said the prime minister in front of the municipal mayors, according to News.ro.
