Orban said that he would respond to Putin’s proposal to take Transcarpathia

“You Germans have already tried in other territories, and in the end we lost. So experience suggests that you should not embark on this adventure,” Orban responded to Depfner’s corresponding question.

The Hungarian Prime Minister believes that the war of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation against Ukraine will soon end.

Orbán also noted that Hungary does not want to leave NATO and the EU, even if there are problems with Brussels that need to be resolved.

Context

Transcarpathian region is in western Ukraine, bordering Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Romania. At various times the region was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

About 150 thousand ethnic Hungarians now live in the Transcarpathian region. Hungary calls the “restoration of the rights” of national minorities one of the conditions for Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

In anticipation of the full-scale invasion of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation in February 2022, Hungary moved troops to the border of Ukraine. The task of the Hungarian armed forces is twofold: one is to provide and assist in solving humanitarian problems, the other is to close the border so that “no armed group can penetrate” into the country, the Hungarian Ministry of Defense said on February 22.

Putin hoped to capture Ukraine in three days, but the war has now continued for four years.

Orban has repeatedly blocked EU sanctions against the occupying country of the Russian Federation and met with Putin several times after Russia began its war against Ukraine.
