Folk calendar

Spiridon and Nikodim

In Rus', on this day it was supposed to transfer chickens to the winter nooks, as well as mark the old and weak, and select birds for slaughter. They prepared various chicken dishes: baked or stuffed chicken, minced chicken cutlets, kurniki – pies filled with chicken meat.

In some areas, fishermen celebrated their holiday on Nikodim and Spiridon. On this day, proverbs and sayings related to water fishing were remembered: “The earth does not feed, but the water does”; “Water is not a field, you don’t plow, you don’t sow, but you are full.” However, this occupation could also be dangerous, especially in the northern seas. This is reflected in the popular expressions: “To eat a fish, you have to get into the water”; “To catch fish is to walk on the verge of death”; “Fish catchers are ruinous people.”

The hunters also held Nicodemus and Spyridon in special esteem. At this time they went out for the first hare hunt in fresh snow. Hunters also had their own sayings: “Even the beast runs to the hunter”; “If you chase two birds with one stone, you won’t catch a single one” (or another version of the same saying – “If you chase two birds with one stone, you won’t catch a single one”); “The horse is not dear, but the hare is dear.” Hare meat was considered a delicacy, and if the animal was caught, the hunter's family would have a delicious dinner that day.
