Trump appealed to Erdogan

In late September, Trump told a meeting with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House that the best thing Ankara could do to help end the war in Ukraine was to stop buying oil and gas from Russia. Türkiye buys natural gas from Russia, and the two countries also cooperate, among others, in the construction of Turkish nuclear power plants.

After the meeting, Fidan told the media, including the Anatolia Agency, that he talked with US officials about security in the region and the situation in the Gaza Strip. He said that he also presented Ankara's position on Syria. That day, the country's leader, Ahmad al-Shara, visited the White House.

After Monday's meeting, Trump praised al-Shara, calling him a “very strong leader” and a “tough guy.” He also noted that al-Shara gets along well with the president of Turkey, whom he also called a “great leader.” Türkiye is one of the main allies of the interim president of Syria, who gained power by overthrowing the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
